Do you have text neck ?

Text messages seem to be the new norm for young and old alike and it can be a pain in the neck - literally.  In fact, a recent study sponsored by Facebook shows that 79% of the population between the ages of 18 and 44 have their cell phones with them almost all the time- with only 2 hours of their waking day spent without their phone on hand. With over a billion people using smartphones, “text neck” is a new buzzword that is becoming a common household name. We all need to be aware of text neck as a potential threat to our health.

What is text neck ?

Text neck (also called forward head posture) is an overuse syndrome used to describe headaches, migraines, tightness, neck pain and shoulder pain. Text neck is manifested from having your head hung forward and down looking at your mobile device, tablets, and laptops for extended periods of time. Because, the average adult head weighs 10 lbs, tilting the head down increases the gravitational pull on the skull, and for every inch of forward head posture there is 10 lbs of additional weight and stress added to the cervical spine (neck).  Long term, text neck can lead to muscle strain, disc herniations and pinched nerves.

How to prevent text neck

There are steps you can take to prevent text neck and forward head posture. The most effective method is keeping your spine healthy and that’s what we are all about! Other ways to prevent text neck

1. Fix your posture - When using your phone to text, sit or stand up straight with your shoulders back. Hold your phone up at eye level, keeping your arms relaxed.

2. Limit screen time and take breaks-Spend less time using your phone, and try to use a laptop or desktop computer for checking emails and using the internet, since the screens are larger and it's usually a little easier to maintain good posture when using them.

3. Technology can even lend a hand. There are different types of mobile APPs available that are designed to help prevent text neck such as the Text Neck Indicator from the Text Neck Institute.
